With increasing interest in lifelong education caused by rapid social change to information-oriented and knowledge-based society, there is a growing demand for new policies that have a vital role to develop people's potential and reinforce national competitiveness. At this point, a demand for a high level of professional education regarding continuing education and job skills for adults has been increasing.
On account of excellent education infrastructure, schools and universities have been more vitalized than IocaI Iifelong educational institutions. Yet, the school and university do not allow outside adult learners to fully access buth quality education programs and school faciIities for their learning needs.
This report begins to recognize the issues that college should open and develop its lifelong curriculum suited to different adult groups with learning needs. Also high quality Iifelong programs - no less than regular university courses - should be built to fill their needs. To achieve this, this study examines the concept and function of the uriversity-based lifelong education, and presents how to invigorate the institution through a study on the operation of its facilities in the University.
The outcome of the study shows that revitalization of the college-based Iifelong education should consider following factors which are (1) suggesting an alternative solution to current low attendance rate at the local institution due to lack of accessability and also increasing participation rate: (2) establishing new policies to support the programs reflecting the condition of Gang-Won Province lifelong institution (3) developing new programs customized for Universities and local lifelong education centers: (4) diversifying curriculum in ways to have learners, easily access to the center through liaison between the university and local institution : (5) providing university's unique and specialized courses: and lastly (6) providing courses that can receive either a completion certificate or qualification upon finishing this course connected with not only leisure activity but also various fields such as finding employment, promotion, and sell-improvement. The suggestions of this study not only will provide the college-based lifelong education center excellent programs but also will help it play a leading role in society.
