In this study, Korean mothers' choice-dilemma between mothering and working was investigated and the methods how to be treated by feminist therapy were also studied through literature reviews. This study examined the loss and depression of mothers which were caused by the dilemma from patriarchic motherhood ideology and capitalistic productivity ideology in the respect of feminism.
To inspect through the reality in which mothers find themselves to face loss no matter if they choose mothering or working, Korean cultural influence to this circumstance - that mothers must select one alternative and leave the other - was studied. Furthermore, patriarchy, Korean collectivistic family-based culture, capitalism, motherhood ideology and gender-role stereotype were pointed out as influential cause of modern women's need to stay on job to be independent from man.
To resolve the dilemma, new motherhood ideology is critically necessary that can reinterpret and redefine mothering. In other words, the need to investigate parenting methods to raise child without resulting in mother to be the only sacrificing one is suggested.
In order to help mothers in dilemma, feministic narrative therapy is another important way mentioned. Feministic narrative therapy brings an objection against typical ideology, making it possible to argue individuals' own stories according to their own experience. In this study, I suggested some counter-stories as examples: admitting the social value of motherhood, creating new motherhood ideology, becoming a true-self through motherhood and achieving gender-impartial society.
