Nicéphore Niépce made the first permanent photograph in 1827 using the bitumen-based "heliography" process developed. After that, through the partnerships with Nicéphore Niépce, Louis Jacque Mande Daguerr announced the existence of photographs named this first practical process for making them with a camera the daguerreotype in 1839. Nowadays, thanks to the development of photography, it is possible to take photos of microbes, the galactic system, vivid freeze-frames of superhigh-speed moments. However, these pictures just show external appearances using visible rays. It motivated this study with ideas how internal things are expressed and why pictures should be taken with only visible rays.
It is said that people have three different kinds of desires. The first one is survival instincts such as the desire of appetite, excretion and sleep. The second one is sexual desires and the last is ecological and social instincts like the desire of subordination, control, competition and triumph. So this study tries to express various desires of people through the images created by the dental digital panoramic x-rays. Even though we can't see instinctive desires with x-rays, it is possible to show the images of desires created by using x-rays that can see through invisible inside part of human body.
For this study, an X-Ray Pax-400 machine of dental computed tomography was used. First of all, to get most proper images, it was needed to understand the theory of x-rays apparatus optimized and set for taking pictures of oral cavity. Unlike a general x-ray apparatus, the dental digital panoramic x-ray records the inner part of subjects by rotating 180 degrees for 18 seconds. It created the images that were appeared as planes instead of round objects. Also, according to the changes of subjects' locations and angles, it could be possible to express distorted and symmetrical images focused on perspectives. In this point, the images taken by dental digital panoramic x-rays were suitable for expressing the sense of desire, theme of this study, with metaphorical and visual way. In taking photos, materials for the works were used such as shapeless ceramics, cold metal, birds and fishes with born. By using these things, this study tried to express the idea of desires inside the human natures and messages that excessive desires can cause destructions.
Now a while back, x-rays were recorded on film. But currently digital x-ray machines enable photographers to produce fine-art photographs in which the x-ray's characteristic engrafts photographer's emotion and intention more easily than ever before. So far some photographers has made artistic photos using x-rays, but this study was the first attempt to work with dental digital panoramic x-rays. This work based on studies and experiences about digital panoramic x-rays photos will play an important role as a pioneer in the field of fine-art photographs using digital panoramic x-rays.
