The purpose of this study is to analyze how to process tense and aspect for elementary school English textbooks. The textbooks' tense and aspect were compared with LSWE(Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English) corpus data.
The analysis on this corpus is made by using a concordance program, Word Smith 5.0 Tool and part-of-speech tagging using CLAWS POS tagger.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows:
First, in tense, elementary school English textbooks and LSWE(Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English) corpus have similar distributions.
Second, in aspect, elementary school English textbooks and LSWE(Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English) corpus have different distributions. LSWE corpus has the present perfect aspect and past perfect aspect however in elementary school English textbooks don't have the present perfect aspect and past perfect aspect.
In conclusion, from the above results students have different order in acquiring English tense and aspect patterns and I hope it will be necessary to improve the present perfect aspect and past perfect aspect in the textbooks.
