The purpose of this paper is to find answers to the question of the theodicy by studying Calvin. Calvin responds to the question of the theodicy with the recognition that everything is according to God's providence and that nothing can happen without God's will.
First, Calvin is wary of attempts to find the origin of evil in something other than God and also warns against attempts to put God in charge of evil. According to Calvin, God is not only Creator, but also God of providence thus God intervenes in everything. And this is applied equally to the problems of evil and suffering. Therefore, there is no fate or chance, and it is wrong to replace God's will with simple permission. Calvin eventually tries to explain the problem of evil without weakening any of the concepts of God's goodness and omnipotence. Due to that, incomprehensible questions that seem contradictory occur and Calvin refers to the mystery of God, the hidden will of God as the final answer.
In conclusion, Calvin offers counsels based on God's providence. Because the focus of Calvin's theodicy is ultimately on how to understand and overcome the reality of evil and suffering that believers face. Especially, his understanding of suffering of believers as chastisement from God provides for believers patience and comfort and realization that suffering is not merely meaningless.
