The aim of the present study is to explore translation strategies of humor on screen from Russian to Korean languages. The Russian comedy film titled 〈Kiss Them All!〉(2013) was chosen as the corpus of the research. In my research I mainly focus on the examples of Verbally Expressed Humor (VEH), the conception developed by Ritchie(2000). For the analysis I developed my own classification of humor, based on Raphelson-West's(1989) and Lee Sung Bin's(2013) categorization of humor. The humorous expressions that was detected and identified in the object of the research into four groups were divided into four groups, which are 1) cultural humor, 2) humor based on slang, 3) linguistic humor and 4) universal humor. I also attempted to develop my own framework of the study based on two theories of screen translation of humor, which were proposed by Tomaszkiewicz (1993) and Chiaro(2010). The four strategies I selected for my analysis are 1) Literal Translation, 2) Explication, 3)Equivalence and 4) Omission. Each category of Verbally Expressed Humor has been analyzed on the basis of the four translation strategies.
The focus of the study was in finding the best way to transfer different kinds of humorous expressions from Russian to Korean language. The result of analysis shown that more than half of humor expressions, observed in 〈Kiss Them All!〉 wasn't transferred to Korean successfully and the translation strategies that were mainly employed in those cases are Omission and Literal Translation. On the other hand, based on the findings of the study, this study suggests that Equivalence strategy is the most effective way to transfer the humorous effect into another language.
