Handangyoosa is a Chinese classical novel which was written by Parktaesuk(朴泰錫) in 1852 and published next year. The first half of this book contains the Han(漢) dynasty's history and the second contains the Dang(唐)'s history. It is called Yeoneui(演義) novel which means not a real history but a fiction which is far from real facts. Handangyoosa introduced a new form of creation which borrows the style of Pyongjeombon(評點本) novel in China and its remarkable characteristic is acceptance of Hyupbi(夾批). It is possible because Kimsungtan(金聖嘆) or Mojonggang(毛宗崗)'s Pyongjeombon novels attracted a man of letters' attention under the circumstance that Chinese novels were widely read in late Chosun. As a result it seems that Handangyoosa is a fiction but tries to represent the narrative form of Yeoneui novel and also accept Pyongjeombon style.
In nineteenth century, there were some Pyongjeombon novels such as Susangwanghanrugi(水山廣寒樓記) and Jeolwhagidam(折花奇談) but Handangyoosa so it is necessary that we have to grasp concrete facts of critical materials of novels in this time. But only Handangyoosa wasn't annotated whereas others were done. So it is imperative for me to annotate critical materials in Handangyoosa before everthing else.
