The neoliberal social theories have to achieve some tasks in order to obtain an academic hegemony. For example, they should be able to redescribe the social as the economic, erode the fundamental concepts of critical social theories and inscribe their own concepts into academic vocabularies and common sense. If these tasks are achieved, it happens that social theorists unwittingly use neoliberal concepts in spite of critical intents. This paper attempts to explore and criticize the neoliberal transformation of concepts in the impressive conceptual extension of capital.
The most important moment of conceptual extension of capital is the concept of human capital of G. Becker. He intended to analyze the concrete qualities of labor and the effects of educations on labor wages. In his provocative analysis, he introduced the concept of human capital and that resulted in the replacements of labor by human ‘capital.’ This rewriting leads us to think skilling and learning of laborers as a kind of capital investment to the human beings. In this conception, we cannot but consider laborers as enterprisers investing their own capital to themselves. Together with it, the concept of labor is categorically denied.
The concept of social capital following human capital was an attempt to capitalize the whole areas of concrete social relationships. In fact, social capital is a very ambiguous concept; for it may be differently conceptualized according to whether its subject is individuals or collectivities. But its ambiguity has induced the debates on its denotation and connotation and helped itself mobilized for analyzing the various social phenomena. And its diffusion has weakened the theoretical status of solidarity which is still one of the key concepts of critical social theories.
Cultural capital is the concept invented by P. Bourdieu and the motif of his invention was very critical. Despite his intent, his concept of cultural capital has an effect of eclipsing the normative foundation of social theories, for his critique of legitimatized cultures unintentionally makes the culture as a whole entrapped into the relativism. For the rejuvenation and development of critical social theories, it is necessary to explore the theoretical implications of labor, solidarity and the normative foundation of critique and apply them to the experiential studies.
