The purpose of this study is to identify the age identity of older persons in Korea. In order for this, cognitive age which is composed of four sub-categories(feel-age, look-age, do-age, and interest-age) and youth age (the number of years between chronological age and cognitive age) were compared to chronological age and analyzed by individual characteristics such as socio-demographic variables, level of social activities, and personality. Study population is 822 persons aged 60 and older who are using multi-purpose senior center located in Metropolitan areas such as Busan, Kwangju, Daejeon, and Daegu.
The results show that most respondents perceived themselves younger than their actual age. Out of four sub-categories of cognitive age, respondents perceived themselves oldest in 'look-age', while they did youngest in 'interest-age.' Chronological age had a strong relationship with cognitive age but not 'discrepancy age.' Do-age and interest-age was influenced by health status, educational background, the level of social activity, and a sense of self-control, while look-age and feel-age was only influenced by chronological age. In sum, the age identity in later life varies with personal characteristics and cannot be represented by chronological age anymore.
On the basis of the findings in this study, the concept of age identity has to be emphasized in the field of gerontological research as well as in the policy and the markets for older persons. From now on, we need to keep in mind a saying, 'age is just a number.'
