Spanish divided politics, culture, and ideology into two groups and
fight in war. Because of the brutal memory of war, people could not
reconcile after the civil war and people could not erase the memory
from their mind.
The Franco party, who won the war, had a strong political creed
that they are right. Franco political system did all it could do to
enforce their ideology in every artistic activities including fiction and
justified it. Therefore, many writers and intellectuals had to exile in
order to get away from Spain's gloomy and frustrating reality.
From where they are, they try to recover the free Spanish
cultural indication before the civil war through literature. As a
refugee, the life was not easy. As time passed, the dreams and
political ideologies that they had at the time of exile started to
change. Away from their home land and living in a foreign country
as a foreigner, they suffered from pain. And these problems caused
a mental sense of futility like an ideological sense of futility. For
many refugee writers, returning to their native country became a
dream and they started to express sorrow they feel as a foreigner
in a foreign country through their literary work. The ideological
intensity in their works started to fade. The contents that used to
be inflammatory in order to firm the republic party's belief have
changed to refugee writers' agony of lose of their native country.
They put distance to ideology and homeland and focus on suffering
as a foreigner and finding oneself. It's not the recovery of free
Spanish cultural indication, but the frustration and agony for
ideology and reality.
1975, after the death of Franco, refugee writers decided to return
to Spain. For those who left Spain for political issues returned
without any hesitation, however, they could not find the ideology in Spain they missed so much. There was no way that will connect
drastically changed reality and themselves.
Refugee writers and writers who stayed in Spain abused each
other, defense and justified themselves. Those writers who stayed in
Spain criticized refugee writers as traitors who left sick native
country. However, those who left to find freedom of expression
argued that they strived to have respect to Spanish mind and
Spanish in the time of dark Spain under Franco.
The psychological gap between the refugee writers and those
who stayed could not be repaired. They had been living in a
different way for so long that they had nothing in common to
understand each other.
