Granule sludge sequencing batch reactor (GS-SBR) represent an attractive alternative to conventional activated sludge processes due to their small footprint and their low energy consumption and excess sludge production. Therefore, in order to evaluate the effects of GS-SBR on the advanced treatment of wastewater with high concentration, this research using synthetic wastewater was performed to investigate the characteristics of the reactor of organic and nutrient removal. Base on the results of research, DO concentration during Run 1 - 4 ranged from 5.52 to 6.72 mg/L. At operation mode of aeration/non-aeration of Run 1(1.5:1), Run 2(2:1), Run 3(2.5:1), and Run 4(3:1), the percentages of COD, T-N and T-P removal for GS-SBR, 97.3 to 99.3%, 68.3 to 53.3%, and 63.3 to 70.3%, respectively. This indicates that prolong non-aeration period is needed for higher denitrification. Within operating time of thirty days, SS, volatile SS (VSS), MLSS and sludge volume index(SVI) ranged from 6.25 to 6.65 mg/L, 5.41 to 5.85 mg/L, 1500 to 3960 mg/L, 80 to 101 ㎖/g, respectively. These results revealed the granluar sludge in GS-SBR had more higher microbial density and more rapidly settleable compared to the sludge in conventional activated sludge reactor.
