This article focuses on the relationship between Chinese popular culture and
nationalism in modern China. In the post-Mao era, Chinese popular culture includes the social practices by which Chinese remember the collective past and national traditions by emphasizing what is considered to be ‘characteristically Chinese.’The emphasis on tradition is believed by many to make Chinese cultural products to stand out in the world market. Furthermore, this emphasis fills the gap in nationalistic sentiment left by the weakening of socialist ideals.
yearnings for the past and its lyrics indicate nationalist sentiments. By asserting the symbols of authenticity, musicians identify themselves as a Chinese rock band.
This trend is not a sudden shift. Rather, it is a response to some stimuli
accumulated from the 1980s until the present, including the Chinese intellectuals’ reevaluation of the national past and tradition and their self-reflection on the negative results of modernization, while at the same time certain diplomatic incidents of 1990s made people aware of the necessity of Chinese solidarity in the era of a crisis of socialist ideology.
It can be said that the retrospective tendency in Chinese popular culture is a
strategy that people in the Chinese cultural industries have employed in order to command a better position in the world market. In other words, the strategic stance of the people working in the Chinese culture industry is globalization of local tradition, and it leads to a situation that can be labeled as ‘new chinoiserie.’
We can conclude that the nationalist aspect of modern Chinese popular culture is very important in the context of Chinese participation in globalization and that it is a disjunctive intersection where various attitudes and understandings are crossing over.
