This study analyzes and compares the marriage networks of the residents in three different types of villages-the fishing village, the farming village and the yangban (the traditional Korean nobility of scholar-bureaucrats) village-in Yeonghae Community(Yeongdeok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do province). 480 married women from two fishing villages, five farming villages and three yangban villages came under close scrutiny. Included in the study, however, are those women who married the native men that had been born in the villages and lived there ever since, whereas those who settled in the villages after they got married are excluded from the analysis. Some important findings from this study can be summarized as follows:
1. In all 10 villages under investigation, marriages for almost all the villagers are arranged within the Yeonghae Community comprised of Yeonghae market-goers.
2. The marriage patterns of fishing villagers are different from those of farming and yangban villagers. People in the fishing villages are most likely to marry people in the same or other fishing villages; they seldom marry people from the farming villages.
3. There is little difference between common farming villagers and yangban villagers in their marriage patterns. The proportions of marriages within the Yeonghae Community-a regional endogamy-are very high and proportions of regional exogamy are very low for both groups.
4. Still, some of the leaders from the major families in yangban villages married into the prominent families in remote areas such as Andong, Yeongyang and Gyeongju.
5. This study also shows that the marriage networks developed between villages and between families have a significant effect on the social life and human relations of the local residents in this community.
