Tasan is a very pragmatic and active Confucian scholar who cannot believe in the existence of God and life after death. But he introduces Christian theology and dualistic metaphysics in his interpretations of Confucian classics. It is of course certain that he does not want to become a Christian or a philosopher. Then what are his theology and metaphysics? The fact that Tasan’s learning is the antithesis of Chu Hsi’s learning is, I think, the key to solve the problem. Whereas Chu Hsi’s learning, like Taoism, has a naturalistic tendency, Tasan’s learning, like Legalism, has a humanistic tendency. In Chu Hsi’s naturalism, where even guishen is no more than yinyang in this changing world, humans must be immerged in the no-action of naturalness, so that no subject of human activity, moral or political, cannot be allowed for. Tasan’s theology and metaphysics are designed to break through Chu Hsi’s naturalism, to open the supernatural dimension, and to establish humans as moral or political subjects beyond the natural dimension.
