For effective interaction between people and emotional robots that exhibit emotional expressions, designers should design emotional robots in order for people to empathize with. While there have been some studies on how well people recognize robotic emotional expressions, research on the extent to which people empathize with robotic emotional expressions has hardly been explored. The objectives of this study, therefore, are to investigate how people empathize with robotic emotional expressions and to provide the basis for designing a user-friendly emotional robot. To that end, we conducted an experiment which employed a 2 X 2 between groups factorial design. The between-group factors consisted of modes of robotic emotional expressions (bruises or speech) and the participants’ genders (boy or girl). In addition, we investigated the correlation between the impressions of the robot and the degree of human empathy with the robot. The research subjects in the experiment were elementary school students in the 3rd grade, who interacted with the robot by participating in a quiz game. Following the quiz task, the participants completed a post-experimental survey so that the impressions of the robot and the degree of human empathy with the robot could be evaluated. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the degree of human empathy with the robot according to the modes of robotic emotional expressions, yet there was a significant difference in the degree of human empathy with the robot according to the participants’ gender. In addition, the participants empathized more with the robot which displayed impressions of friendliness, warmth, and shame.
