The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the historic
change in the most typical collections of letter works which have
published from 1900s to 1930s and their meaning from cultural
history, as part of full-fledged research into the letters as
modernized writing.
The comparison of the pre-modernization letter and the
post-modernization letter indicates that the field of philosophical
discussion which the Chinese letter intelligentsia considered to be
one of the important functions of letter disappeared and the field
of ecriture, the confessional writing for individual discovery, was
reinforced. The analysis of the letter text in the ‘Reinforcement’,
the reading book which is the modern textbook, indicated that
letters were used as a means to attain Enlightenment for social
communication through the unity of speech and writing, such as
modernization.
‘Cheokdok’, the letter manual, was distributed widely in 1910,
and romantic letter collections, such as ‘Flame of Love’, were in
vogue. In 1930s, collection of literary letters written famous literary artists and celebrities, were popular.
Specifically, collections of literary letters written by literary
artists were used as another form of literary media through
printed letters, they were relegated to simple forum for
expressing private thoughts or reduced to the product of
commercial strategy under the rubric of literature. However, it
actually had a significant effect on the formation of modern
novels, such as first-person novel, letter style novel, and others.
