Since the first seismometer was placed on the Moon by the Apollo missions in 21 July 1969, the field of planetary seismology was opened. In the following years a network of four other seismic stations was operated continuously until all of the seismometers were turned off from the Earth in 30 September 1977. So far, except for the Earth, the Moon is the only terrestrial planet that we have seismic observations relevant to its interior properties. The outline of the structure and particularly the boundary between the crust and mantle beneath the stations could be characterized using these data. However the restricted coverage of the network and the limited quality of data due to media properties make it difficult to probe the interior of the Moon as we can do on the Earth. This review summarizes the knowledge obtained from analyses of data collected over the approximately eight-year operation of the Apollo seismic network and the associated constraints on the interior of the Moon.
