This study examines the value chain of Korean Automotive Industry in 2000s. For this, this study defines value chain as the combination modes of production technology and inter-firms relations. And then this study analyzes the applied production technology, structure in inter-firm division of labor, and the characters and implications of new value chain in Korean Automotive Industry. The findings can be summarized as follows:
Since 2000, the new production technology - modularization and platform integration - applied in Korean Automotive Industry in earnest. This made module suppliers the main players. By the use of module suppliers, automakers could reduce and externalize production functions.
But This did not make the horizontal disintegration. In Korea, automaker bring up module suppliers and the other suppliers is located in sub-suppliers of affiliated module suppliers. As result, hierarchical value chain structure is established in which the automaker occupy the top class, affiliated module suppliers medium class, and the other suppliers lower class.
In conclusion, the value chain of the Korean automotive industry has taken a new form that can be conceptualized as a ‘subordinate modular value chain’. It combines a new production technology, ‘modularity’ with subordinate inter-firm relations.
