This study examines the changes in disclosures of eleven Korean listed firms that early adopt international financial reporting standards(IFRS) and the effects of the early adoption of IFRS on financial statements of these firms. It also outlines useful implications for the successful adoption of IFRS by following firms. To do so, we analyse early adopters' financial statements to examine its impact on net income, assets, liabilities and stockholders' equity, as well as the impact caused by the adoption of IFRS on the changes in disclosure features, including volume of notes and number of subsidiaries in consolidated financial statements.
Our results suggest that IFRS-adoption increases the number of subsidiaries that are included in the consolidation by more than double. It leads to large increase in the volume of disclosure in note and decrease in the number of accounts on the face of the financial statements. Furthermore, we find that individual firm tends to select the way of representing financial statements based on its unique need, thereby resulting potential confusion in comparability of financial statements across firms. On average, early adoption of IFRS has a positive impact on asset and liability but an insignificant impact on net income and stockholders' equity.
Interviews with early adopters suggest that successful implementation of IFRS is warranted when the firm has strong supports for IFRS adoption by top management and competent accounting staffs.
