The purpose of this study is, in addition to literal interpretation of all sorts of Nujeong established in Koryung province till now, look into the distribution of Nujeong and the shift of the times and, analyze its spacial function with its materialization. The results of analysis can be summarized as follows:
First, it's found that in Koryung province, several historic Nujeongs such Byuksongjeong(碧松亭) and Gounjeong(孤雲亭) were founded in the Silla era already. However, it seems that coming to 16C, its full-scale foundation was began, this foundation atmosphere was steadily continued until comparatively lately.
Any Nujeong founded from Goryeo to early Joseon dynasty period has not been found in Koryung province, besides any record on it in literature materials has not been found. Coming to 16C, with the appearance of an native-born classical scholars with economic wealth to spare and scientific culture, Nujeongs were began to established.
Its establisher or manager pursued studies under Toigyeo or Nammyeong‘s instruction as their pupils, and most of them were private school literary men. They interchanged letters with neighboring literary men around in similar environment, tried academic discussion with them, and played a leading role in forming a public opinion while maintaining the superiority within a fixed status order of country village community.
Second, it played the function as a space for pursuing studies and receiving education because in Joseon dynasty period there was no many places which would take charge of an education in country village.
Therefore, in the country village Nujeong took charge of the function as a study room under the private education system. For example, if a person in the government service give up his official post and retire into country and then establish Nujeong, many disciples would gather around for the pursuit of learning from him, sometimes they would establish Nujeong for the purpose of giving a place for instructing the sons of their close relatives while living in retirement as native-born scholars of a country village. Coming up to 19C, Nujeong aiming at a place for pursuing studies had began to establish gradually, most Nujeongs established in those period were permitted to the sons of their close relatives as the objects of instruction only.
In the spacial function of Nujeong, the purpose of the early establishment of the Nujeong was sometimes changed according to the current of the times. For instance, a Nujeong established for the purpose of pursing studies there in early years of establishment was changed in its functions with the processes of repairing, moving and decline. Therefore, there are a lot of instances in which Nujeong, which seems to be simply Jaesil at a glance, was established for the purpose of giving a place for pursuing studies or receiving an education in the early days of establishment.
Finally, the spacial function of Nujeong was fairly changed today, so it's not easy to understand its cultural original form of the early days. the understanding of that would be possible only through analysis of various materials.
