Each year on March 8, innumerable events celebrating International Women's Day(IWD) occur all around the world. IWD is a core symbol of women's struggles which have been ongoing in the 20th century throughout the world. Although IWD is a major day of global celebration, the historical origin of IWD is surrounded by dispute. Recent studies have pointed out that there are many versions of story about the origin of IWD, some of which are allegedly apocryphal. In this paper, I attempts to reconsider the debate by examining the history of IWD, and to compare two distinct versions of the origin story which were introduced into Korea with other ones. To begin with, I examine historical moments which were pivotal in creating the global symbol of 'IWD on March 8'. Next, the The Korean history of IWD is reviewed. Korean women began to observe IWD in the early 1920s, but the observance of IWD was halted in South Korea after the division of territory and the Korean War. IWD was revived in the middle of 1980s, as progressive women's movement became more active. It was not until the late 1980s that a new version of origin story emerged in Korea. The story traces the origin of IWD to the demonstration of women workers held in 'Rutgers Square' on March 8, 1908. This paper argues that the historical process through which 'IWD on March 8' has been established cannot be reduced into a single origin.
