It was important where the tomb was established and how to make it relating with the conception of burial and the view of the world after death. In this study, I examined the position and distribution of the stone chamber tomb which appeared as mainstream tomb system in Silla(新羅) following the wooden chamber tomb with stone mound and the social and cultural background for accepting the stone chamber tomb in Silla.
First of all, I examined the existing position and distribution of stone chamber tombs centering around Gyeongju(慶州), the capital of Silla. Wooden chamber tombs with stone mound which were previous tomb system were concentrated in flat area as city of Gyeongju and Koenchoen-eup(乾川邑) Keumchok-ri(金尺里). However, stone chamber tombs were distributed in the mountainous district and hill areas as well as in the flat area. They were distributed as the groups of many tombs. Royal tombs were specialized in stone tombs areas and the order was established among tombs group. Among the tombs in same group, social order was established and the tendency of ramification was appeared.
The period from late fifth century to early sixth century when the stone tomb was accepted in Gyeongju was the turning point from the early ancient times to middle ancient times of Silla. At that times the king-oriented ruling system and status order were organized, family line was appeared and ramification of family line was advanced in Silla. I understand the special nature of the distribution of stone tombs relating these social and cultural background of Silla.
