A queen refers to the spouse of a king. This paper compares the cultures of Korea's three ancient kingdoms of Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla through an examination of the records on their queens as mentioned in the Historical Records of the Three Kingdoms. And this examination reveals that cultural differences did exist among the Three Kingdoms. Whereas most of the records on Silla queens come from Silla kings, records on Goguryeo and Baekje queens are rarely found. Furthermore, records on queens appear in Goguryeo only prior to moving the capital to Pyeongyang, and even then, these records are more than not on queens from powerful families related to the sovereignty. Records on Baekje queens are mostly about foreign ladies who became queen of Baekje. In addition, names of Goguryeo queens cannot be found in the Historical Records of the Three Kingdoms, but most Baekje queens are referred to by name.
There are differences in the amount of influence queens have on succession to the throne. A child of a woman who was not the official queen could succeed the throne in Goguryeo. But none of the children of women who were not the official queen ascended the throne prior to the unification of the peninsula in Silla. Moreover, a son-in-law of a former king not related by blood and not sharing the same surname succeeded the throne through the daughter of the former king. This represents the importance of the bloodline of the queen in succeeding the throne.
Comparison of the queens of the Three Kingdoms reveals that patriarchal hierarchy was firmly established in Goguryeo and Baekje from early on. Non-patrilineal aspects, on the other hand, can be seen in succession to the throne in Silla, and the queen represents political significance aside from being the spouse of the king. The founding myth of Silla contains a unique legend of the birth of its founding queen Aryeong, and she is a significant person in her own right such as being referred to as one of the two saints, the other being the founding king Hyeokgeose. Such a symbolic significance of the founding queen Aryeong is transmitted to later queens, and it seems the queens of Silla enjoyed a higher political and social status that is quite different from Goguryeo and Baekje.
