Classical music concerts are one of the most important cultural products of today. However, we have not been able to view them as common goods and assess its commercial value properly. Moreover in fact, we lack tremendously on the analysis of purchasing behaviors of its consumers. Therefore in this study, I have took the view of seeing classical music concerts as cultural products possessing market-economic values and examined consumers’ determinants for purchasing classical music concerts which satisfies their needs and desires.
First, I have examined factors considered to have effect on the purchasing behavior through the ethnographic interview and verified whether the personal relevance of quality had influence on the purchase decision of concerts, or if involvement factors (e.g. the classification of a paying or free ticket audience, music major, subscription of a classic music journal) had influence. The relationship between the principal variables were verified during the process of recognizing and managing consumer messages about the concert through the conceptual model developed.
As a result, consumers with high involvement emphasized more on central attributes(e.g. content of the performance), and consumers with low involvement emphasized more on peripheral attributes(e.g. marketing elements) when making a purchasing decision. Therefore, it would most efficient to communicate with central attributes to persuade consumers with high involvement towards performance product messages and do the opposite for the other. Moreover, while analyzing the model, I discovered that women consumers considered central attribute greater than men had.
In this study I have clarified what consumers consider when evaluating the quality of a performance by looking at their purchasing behavior of individual factors. I have also confirmed which variables increase the competitiveness among various types of concert. This suggests that consideration of appropriate concert elements can strengthen the relationship between the quality evaluation and purchasing behavior of concerts.
