This study, as a part of controversy between technological determinism and social constructionism, examines the impact of technology usage on the formation civic consciousness of the individuals. We try to establish the differences of civic consciousness between Web 1.0 and social network generations.
This study demonstrates that civic consciousness of the two generations shows statistically significant difference. The impact of ICT usage patterns on the formation civic consciousness was verified to be independent and greater when compared with socioeconomic variables such as gender, age, education, and income.
The technology generations do not have statistically significant differences in terms of dutiful citizenship. On the other hand, the two groups show significant difference in the aspect of self-actualizing citizenship. Therefore, we can conclude that the web 1.0 generation has dutiful citizenship, while the social network generation has self-actualizing citizenship.
Although individuals belong to the same age group, their social consciousness could be different depending on the pattern of technology usage. Social network generation in their twenties, thirties, and forties, acknowledged that they give priority to personal interests when personal and community interests collide.
