In the post-Soviet era, one of the most controversial issues that former Soviet member states were faced with was finding the new identity of their own.
By the time Ukraine became an independent country, nationalists and Ukrainian historians living in exile embarked on a campaign with the aim of publicizing the fact that Ukraine has its own history that clearly sets itself apart from Russia. Ukrainian government and nationalists have created a new myth that represents Ukraine’s unique national and historical background and implemented a set of public education policies designed to instill a nationalistic view of history in the minds of youngsters. All these efforts focus on explaining that Ukrainians’ national identity is a unique combination of East Slavic culture and West European culture. The ultimate goal is to establish their own identity eliminating Russian influence and to emerge as an independent political power in the new world order. Ukraine’s efforts to redefine and rebuild its identity caused constant conflicts with Russia, which culminated in natural gas disputes that were escalated by the Orange Revolution in December 2004 and then have continued since 2006.
