As a part of critical review on the status of theories in political party research in Korea, this article analyzes the characteristics of several theoretical approaches from the perspective of political economy, such as cleavage theory, class voting theory, and left-right party ideology theory.
In contrast to the party research in Western European countries, where class cleavage and left-right ideological spectrum function as dominant factors, the party research in Korea focuses mostly on regional cleavage and progressive-conservative spectrum.
This characteristic could be interpreted on the one hand as a critical application of the political economy theory on the Korean case. Nevertheless it must be noted that the discoursive dominance of regional cleavage functions as a barrier to the process of verifying the political economy theory and its hypotheses.
In addition, the absence of active communication and lively discussion about the concepts and methods could be pointed out as a problem in the theoretical development of the political economy approach.
Especially faced with criticism from the theory of post-industrialism, the political economy theory must deal with the argument that the approach has fundamental limits structurally and temporally. However, the argument about temporal limits of the political economy theory needs further verification through accumulation of more detailed empirical research and studies on various sub-fields.
