After the Meiji Restoration, Japan consistently pursued a policy to enhance national prosperity and defense, and as a result, they fully accepted a Western-style modernization. And, these series of processes rapidly brought Japanese society into a civilization stage which made a distinction between the state and citizen by the measure of civilization. Initially, the spread of enlightenment within the Japanese community was to let the general public do away from with old customs and understand the value of Western civilization, and it had been transformed into a lens to recognize of neighboring countries interms of the Japanese foreign policy.
The distinction between order of state and citizen by the progressing measure of civilization became a trend of thought in a period of time by thinkers like Fukuzawa Yukichi. The Civilization considered a goal that human beings should pursue and for that, more emphasis was put onto the severance of the so-called old customs. The overall penetration of civilization in Japanese society continued to spread civilization outside Japan and this was carried out on the basis of the Imperial violation.
Japan in a pre-modern traditional period was under the influence of the Chinese civilization, but the achievement of modernization as the first one among three East Asian countries served as a momentum to give a self-authority to transplant Western modernization in East Asia. The Colonization of Korea and Taiwan could be considered as a process of an ‘Extension of Civilization’ which Japan preoccupied. This paper is an analysis of logic spread over by Japanese thinkers like Fukuzawa Yukichi that a justification of Japanese colonization of Korea and Taiwan, which they argued it is a natural outcome of an ‘Extension of Civilization.’
