Past research has identified critical job skills for sheltered employment. This study investigates the entry level job skills necessary for successful employment in supported or competitive workplaces. Questionnaires were sent to 11 local high school special education teachers and 14 local employers who worked with employees with disabilities in central Illinois. Out of 35 skills (e.g., displays high level of attendance and punctuality, demonstrates integrity and honest, initiate contact with supervisor when cannot do job, etc), 20 skills were deemed important by both employers and high school teachers for entry level jobs. The employers rated three job entry skills (i.e., correctly handles cash money, reads to find main idea, and learn new job tasks by watching co-workers/supervisor perform them) significantly higher than high school special education teachers. Respondents who worked or taught individuals with intellectual disabilities rated three job entry skills (i.e., demonstrate basic arithmetic skills to subtract, correctly handles cash money and prioritizes work that needs to be completed) significantly higher than those who did not work or teach individuals with intellectual disabilities.
