The Western ecofeminism has been formulated from the efforts to understand environmental issues theoretically and practically. This paper reviews the background and the process in which the theories have been formulated and critically examines controversies around its main themes and theoretical strategies. Certain problems and limitations arise in accepting and applying western ecofeminism outside the western world, particularly in Asian region, and therefore the work of delineating them is a basis on which issues of Asian women's studies can be reflected. By contextualizing the theoretical insights, conceptual frameworks and methodologies of the Western ecofeminism in particular locations of women in Asia, this paper also gauges the possibilities of utilizing the last thirty years of feminist knowledge production and theorizing in productive ways. Having examined applicabilities and limitations of the western ecofeminism, the author concludes that we cannot and ought not expect a universal framework of western ecofeminist theories and practice applicable globally. If we assert that feminist theorizing ought to produce knowledge as embodiment of various and different experiences in concrete locations, it is contradictory to demand western feminists to produce universally applicable theories outside of their experiences and contexts. Therefore the tasks to create analytical and conceptual framework for knowledge production and theorization based on concrete life conditions and locations of non western women in general, and Asian women in particular, are to be carried out by us, women in Asia. The tasks of seeking practical ways will be on our shoulders to formulate ecofeminist communities of positive women who work as active agents. Our tasks in producing theories about women and environment will be to contextualize the insights and achievements of western feminism and continuously negotiate the tension between the universality and paricularity as well as commonalities and differences of women.
