The primary purpose of this study is to explore how the traditional Japanese craft known as Nishijin-ori (西陣織) is preserved and maintained in modern Japan. Nishijin-ori designates a specific type of silk that is mostly handwoven through a complex process of manufacturing based on a minute division labor that is also believed to be a material embodiment of theuniquely Japanese aesthetics of seasonal sensibilities, conceptions of color and design, and other principles. The high quality handwoven silk is continuously produced as an expensive commodity in modern Japan despite the gradual disappearance of the mode of production known as cottage industry in most other industrialized countries, and despite the overall changes of lifestyle and concomitant decline of traditional costume wearing (kimono-banare) in Japan. The present study will first outlines the specific nature and the current state of the production and distribution system of Nishijin textiles. Next, the nature of the craftsmen’s culture (shokunin bunka) is examined along with its implications for the maintenance of Nishijin textile production. Finally, it is arguedthat the continuity of a traditional craft can only be understood as a process of cultural reproduction whose scope reaches far beyond the simple transmission of specific weaving skills.
