Hub competition between major airports has been caused by the circumstantial changes in the air market, such as liberalization and integration of the regional market and invigoration of low cost carriers. In order to evaluate the hub competitiveness between airports and make efficient strategies for major hub airports, some airport competitiveness indexes have been developed and referred. However, each input variable is separately applied to develop the index. Moreover the information on major airlines, which make use of the target airport for its main airport, are ignored. Although the supply characteristics of airport should be considered, it has not been included to the index as input variables. This paper provides a new airport hub competitiveness index, which allows not only the relationship between rival airports but also the characteristics of airport and collaboration with airlines to be systematically implemented in the competitiveness assessment. First the Airline Hub Competition Index (APHCI), which means the relative competitiveness index of the target airport compared to other airports in the target group, is introduced. Then, Airline Contribution Hub Index (ACHI) is structured so that the competitiveness index can explain the impact of the airline's present operation conditions or future strategies on the hub competitiveness. To assure the validity of the suggested indexes in this paper, case studies on 8 major Asian airports hubs ware conducted, and a sensitivity analysis was performed. The analysis results show that developed indexes are suitable to account for the airport hub competitiveness in terms of complex relationships between airports and airlines. Furthermore, since they are easy to calculate and understand, the indexes are practical and useful for evaluating hub competitiveness and establishing airport hub strategies.
