This study aims to look into the discussion on China under the theme of methodology of the history of Chinese literature and a new compilation of literature history starting from the mid 1980s. In the course of it, it examines the details of discussion concentrated on the issues including historical views of literature and periodization of literature history and thereby aiming at evaluating its academic implications of 『History of Chinese Classical Literature Volume 1, 2』 by Hur, Se-uk.
The conclusion of the discussion on methodology of Chinese literature study resolves itself into a matter of compilation of new literature history. The directions for the compilation are to overcome the view of literature history based on traditional circular evolution theory and periodization of literature history by dynasty in a modern perspective. However, there were limitations of not linking it to a new compilation of Chinese literature history that reflects theoretical outcomes.
『History of Chinese Classical Literature Volume 1, 2』 by Hur, Se-uk accepts research results of the existing Chinese literature history and particularly includes acute debate on methodology of Chinese literature study developed in the mid 80s. From that perspective, its academic implications should be evaluated certainly in a positive manner. However, in terms of notions or historical perspectives and periodization of literature, it reveals the limitations of the times that can not break from the former methods for certain.
