The article tried to identify the disciplinary identity of the sociology of education by examining the history of the field as written in South Korea and U.S. The identity is supposed to be built and revealed through the history. The examination is done for the two diverged descriptions of the history: the descriptions from the viewpoint of educators and of sociologists. Disclosed as a result is that the identity of the sociology of education is murky. The assertion by some Korean scholars that the identity can be constructed on the foundation of 'educational sociology' is also found to be groundless. What the result asks seems to be a fresh start to build a new discipline on one of the oldest field, education.
