To decay is the state of nature for memory, both individual and collective. Thus those social movements that are formed to create and sustain collective memory have to constantly struggle against it. In SNULife, an online portal for SNU students, we find a unique case that has successfully achieved that goal by utilizing a feature of tagging system in an unprescribed way. For the last two years or so, the two tags-‘Park Jin Hyuk’ and ‘Park Jing Yeok’(a pun on the former, meaning ‘jail’)-have been extensively used to keep the event in 2009, which involves suspicion of impropriety in the student government election that year, on the forefront of the community members’ collective consciousness. Using the data on the postings in SNULife and their tags for the 18-month period, we analyze how tagging became an effective and lasting way of mobilizing online. The theoretical and practical implications of ‘tag activism,’ and ‘online activism’ in general, are discussed.
