This literature was aimed to understand how art market and art history had been related each other in the era of the crisis of art criticism, and how the expansion of art market had influenced on the knowledge or discourse about art. Especially speaking, I intended to problematize the social understandings of art history and the pressures on the discipline of art history, focusing on the mass consumption of art history. Recently under the global economic crisis, on the one hand, the solidarity between the investment value of art market and art historical value became stronger. But on the other hand, there has been spread quickly the romanticized and mythical point of view that alienated the value or discourses of art history and associated the investment value of art market with the minds or tastes of investors. I think that these two aspects are not an antipathy to each other but give us the clue that we can understand the consumption of art history in our times. In this paper, I tried to reveal that art market have consumed great artists within the art history since the 1980s, have reproduced the mass tastes of art history through blockbuster exhibitions, and consequently created the hostilities toward professional knowledge of art history and the mass demands for 'easy art histories.' Under those situations, not money but heart(or mind) emerged as an important linkage to charactarize the mass consumption of art and art history. Consequently, I examined the position of the discipline of art history in our times by centering on the aspects that the economics of heart(or mind) became a forceful social pressure to move the knowledge of art history, mass tastes for art, and art market.
