The design of a size-reduced power divider using the microstrip line with defected microstrip structure (DMS) is described in this paper. DMS is an etched pattern realized on microstrip lines with the advantages of existing periodic structures preserved while their disadvantages are removed. The characteristic impedance of DMS transmission lines increases, the line width becomes wider, and the electrical length is prolonged due to the inserted DMS patterns which have the additional equivalent inductance and capacitance. It is proved that the DMS pattern can be applied to reduce the size of high frequency circuits for wireless systems. As an example, a size-reduced Wilkinson power divider, which is one of widely used circuits for wireless communication systems, is designed and the measured performances are presented. The size of the power divider with DMS is only 82% of the original one, and the measured and predicted performances are well in good agreement with as expected to power dividers.
