Research in modern Japanese history from 2010 to 2011 can be summarized as follows. First, a number of papers tried to depict modern Japanese history from a Korean perspective. For example, some research explained that the process of the late Tokugawa period toward the Meiji Restoration was triggered not only by western impact, but also by 'confucian political culture'. Second, research on imperial Japan and her colonies by the Korean historians specializing in Japan has increased. It is likely that they could present new ideas different from foreign scholars and Korean researchers of Korean history. Third, some historians began to publish papers on postwar history of Japan. It would be more fruitful to approach this topic from an East Asian perspective, beyond the national level.
