This paper is to review what kind of media the progressive art and culture scene employed and how effective they were in the 1970s and 80s, focusing on theatre, song and film movements. Often, the interest of progressive art and culture movements has been a) how the works of art express progressive view on social reality or b) how effective they are in executing agit-prop purposes at the demonstration. However, what make both of them possible are the media in themselves. In other words, it means theatre, song and film movements can come up with results of art movement by employing different media from those of the established mainstream art scene. Theatre movement threw away the conventional (media of) theatre space and embraced Madang theatre which encouraged the audience participation and occurred in their daily spaces, and song movement dumped LP records- the media of popular songs then- and chose folk songs which were formed and spread by oral tradition. While these movements refused the conventional media of the mainstream, song and film movements in their part aggressively accepted new media of cassette and video tapes. Cassette and video tapes were similar as they were economic sound and image reproducing devices and could be easily manufactured in small scale as well. By choosing different media from the mainstream art scene as mentioned above, these art and culture movements could produce and distribute progressive works of art which were free from the censorship of political power and were untainted by the commercialism demanded by capital. They also attracted as an audience lower class people such as laborers and farmers who had difficulty frequenting theatre spaces before. These media helped them receive the works of art more actively by solidifying their initiative and collectivity, and furthermore encouraged them to produce their own counterpart texts. By doing so, these actions have worked as a power in bringing out a structural change across art and culture scenes by abolishing the censorship on art and empowering independent producers free from the existing art market capital since the mid-1990s when art and culture movements lost their momentum.
