A discourse of the multiculture was opened since 1990's in Korea much later than in western europe. After the beginning of the social discussion, the multicultural studies were mainly focused on the theoretical review of the multiculturalism. However, the governmental policies for the immigrants were oriented to the assimilation policy. Therefore, there was huge gap between multiculture policy and social realities.
Taking various values and the efforts of integration to make better society would be a desirable direction which a multicultural society should take. This study aims to explore a new research paradigm for Korean multicultural studies instead of existing multicultural perspectives. European experiences of Immigration policy would be worthy of notice for Korean multiculture society, because political viewpoints of the european societies are changing from multiculturalism to interculturalism. Therefore, this study analyzed multiculturalism critically and explored the possibility of the interculturalism as a new alternative perspective for integration policy in Korea.
