The aim of research is analyzing of the role and meaning of ddi-bae(띠배)appeared in a ritual along the coast, then goes further to illuminate the status of ddi-bae and its expanding meaning in Pung-e-jae(풍어제, ritual for a big catch of fish) held as a festival. Ddi-bae has different names and is set afloat in the ritual for a big catch of fish. Ddi-bae might divide into two groups : wick type or cylinder type to incinerate, and boat type or raft type to float it far away. Of these the type of boat is prevalent in nation, the type of wick is appeared along the west coast, and the types of cylinder and raft are seen in part. It is thought that the type of raft has been disappeared. On the contrary, it is noticeable that by making Pung-e-jae into a festival, the type of cylinder is newly turned up for tourists to let them hang up sonwonji(소원지). The point of floating ddi-bae to the see is usually only once at the final phase, but twice at the beginning and final phases in part of the west coast. It seems understood that to drift ddi-bae at the last part functions asdelivery equipment to send offerings to gods. By contrast, setting it afloat at the beginning symbolizes bad luck in itself; hence, it is believed that one must light a fire when drifting ddi-bae so that the bad luck is expired. Ddi-bae is formed by ddipool(띠풀), jip(짚), pine tree and susudae(수수대),which are easy to find and lightly floating on the water. It seems derived from environmental factors and consideration of its function. Each implies a specific meaning such as ddipool-a connection between this life and afterlife,jip-abundance and buksa(벽사, cork screw yarn), kaldae-fecundity, susudaedriving out bad luck and pine tree-protecting and purifying space. The components filled in the ddi-bae are hejaebi(허재비), gongmool(공물), kilji(길지)and the like. It can be said that hejaebi symbolizes bodies of yongwang(용왕),janggun(장군), and beolsang(별상), gongmool(공물, jeamool) for pyeback(폐백) kilji for yeadan(예단). The title of ddi-bae is different based on the way in focusing. For example,ddi-bae, jip-bae(짚배) and dde-bae(떼배) seem focused on material busan(부산),balshimj(발심지)i on function; toisong-bae(퇴송배) on the procedure of ritual hensuk-bae(헌석배) on the goal; hon-bae(혼배) and yongsun(용선) on godship. In addition, all ddi-bae will not be incinerated. If it is done, it will playa role for driving out bad luck; if it is just set afloat, it will function as delivery equipment. Ddi-baeis seen as a religious symbol to expel bad luck from the whole village, and carries offerings to gods safely so that it brings security and a heavy catch of fish to the village. These days, due to social changes and weakened religious belief of the local people toward Pung-e-jae, it gets reduced in size compared to the past, or in some cases left out the ritual totally. The alternative to resolve these problems might be that it needs to reconsider Pung-e-jae as a cultural resource reinforcing the region’s identity. Especially, setting ddi-baea float becomes one of the popular events as it lets tourists take part in the ritual hanging up sowonji. To do this, sometimes ddi-bae is made in a big size, or decorated colorfully, or reproduced in a new form but the material is not alternated. Furthermore, there is a time lag between the whole village people and tourists when hanging up sowonji. It indicates that the villagepeople make an effort as sincerely as ever to transmit the religious belief ddi-bae carries. It is a noticeable point. While the village people and tourists are floating ddi-bae, they temporally have sense of unity and identity which is deemed as an important factor in the existing dong-jae. Like this, in regions along shoreline owing to the effort that the village people is developing their religious ritual into tourist resource and shares the benefits with tourists, the extent to take part in the symbol of the ritual has enlarged and goes further the symbol is reproduced. Consequently, it is analyzed that the meaning has more been expanded.
