This paper describes the differential effects which “placement counseling” has on students who are transitioning from middle to high school in contemporary Japanese society: through this description, I provide an understanding of the ways in which their educational aspirations are constructed. I begin by problematizing the previous research on the “warming-up” and “cooling-out” of the students’ aspirations. Next, the ethnographic data is provided to demonstrate that Japanese middle school teachers conduct placement counseling in a way which is devised to preserve rather than to raise or reduce children’s educational aspirations. Even though such counseling intends to provide a secure destination to every student in the transition to high school, it actually works to limit working class students’ aspirations to educational goals easily within their capacity rather than encouraging them to aim for the best possible result. In contrast, thanks to their educated parents’ active engagements, middle class students can pursue and (over)achieve their goals. Thus, this article finds that the educational practices of Japanese middle school teachers have as their unintended consequences the differentiations in educational aspirations and academic attainment along children’s class lines. Therefore, this research suggests that in order to correct the differentiations, Japanese schools should aim to create a culture which encourages educational aspirations.
