This paper aims to study the Korean government's acceptance of western knowledges and the reformation of modern education that was relatively less noted in studies of Korean modern educational history. And its' socio-political meaning in the modern transitional era will be examined. In 1880s, Korean government recognized that opening is an inevitable and global trend. Thus, the government executed a series of open door policy to accommodate western new culture. Open door policy required knowledge on modern western laws and academia along with the training of talent to negotiate with the Western nations. Accordingly, Korean government established government educational institution such as Dongmunhak, Yukyungongwon. This was allegedly the first modern Korean national school. In the meanwhile, the government seeked to reform Sungkyunkwan, the essence of traditional academics in order to promote modernization. During the Reformaion of Kabo, the educational function of Sungkyunkwan was abolished and the modern educational system was aligned around modern professional educational institutions. However, higher educational system, with which to endorse modern national development, was not established. Therefore, in need of the highest educational institution, the government aimed to modernized Sungkyunkwan along with the rapidly changing historical trend. A full-blown modern reformation of Sungkyunkwan was initiated with the proclamation of Daehan Empier. Strengthening of the power of the emperor and the modern reformation of Sungkyunkwan was the key to the Korean empire's modern reform. However, such efforts of Daehan Empier was thwarted by the Japanese annexation.
