The Central-Western pollen-zone is divided into four zones by the analytical data of pollen, sedimentary facies and 14C-dating. Pollen-zoneⅡ,Ⅲ in the 4-zone correspond to Neolithic Age in Central-Western Korea. Pollen-zoneⅡ(8,000~4,600y BP) was the period of Alnus-dominance with the warm and humid climate. Pollen-zoneⅢ(about 4,600~2,000y BP) was the increase of Pinus and the climate was colder and drier than Pollen-zoneⅡ. The sea-level of the West Sea(Yellow Sea) had risen rapidly during the period(about 8,000~6,000y BP) but it had been slowing down the rise since then. The sea-level, from 6,000y BP until now, has fluctuated and finally reached the current level.
The location of Neolithic Sites in Central-Western Korea is divided into CW-phaseⅠ(about 5,000~3,500y BC) and CW-phaseⅡ(about 3,500~1,500y BC) by the analytical data of 14C-dating. CW-phaseⅠshows that settlement sites was mostly located on floodplain at inland and shell middens were located usually on hills in the island areas. CW-phase Ⅱ witnessed that settlement sites and Shell middens were converged on coastal areas and islands for securing food, but settlement sites in the inland floodplains mostly disappeared. Settlements moved to the foothills around the tributary, The group size was very small and distributed at the inland.
It is thought that such changes in location of the Neolithic sites was attributed to the cold climate and the sea-level rise since 3,500y BC. The fall in temperature resulted in a reduction of resources in the inland. For this reason, the center of human activity tended to concentrated on coastal and island. The settlements on the floodplain disappeared and moved to foothills around the tributary areas, forming a small-scaled settlement cosisting of 1 to 5 dwellings caused by flood damages from the sea level rise and abnormal climate.
