This study sought to find out how so-called interdisciplinary people have to learn and how we can educate them. For this, the researchers investigated how Leonardo da Vinci learned what he knew, based on the ”Science of learning” using psychobiographical research methodology. First, Leonardo da Vinci’s life events were selected and interpreted based on the ”Science of learning,” then the meaning of STEAM education was explored. Results showed that da Vinci researched anatomy and geometry to become a great artist. Furthermore, he made considerable efforts to acquire knowledge and to deeply understand several academic disciplines through observation, experience, and the great books. He used conditioned knowledge when he completed tasks and solved problems, and he had abilities to explore and transfer knowledge. Leonardo da Vinci, therefore, was an active learner who had highly developed metacognitive skills. If we hope for our students to become interdisciplinary people like Leonardo da Vinci, STEAM curricula should be developed to encourage students to apply their knowledge to solve problems. To cultivate students as active learners like Leonardo da Vinci, STEAM curricula should focus on metacognitive ability rather than only on students’ successful experiences.
