This study was to investigated the rate and type of preschoolers screened as social- emotional problems, for the early intervention on the abnormal social-emotional preschoolers needed to be implemented on these prerequisite data. “Korean Temperament and Atypical Behavior Scale (K-TABS)”was used as the screening test. The participants were 1,390 preschoolers at 42 child care and education centers, 1,096 preschoolers enrolled in 16 centers and 294 preschoolers referred as at-risk social-emotional problems at 26 centers. Among them, 22 preschoolers were rated by parents and teachers simultaneously. The K-TABS results were analysed as frequency, mean, standard deviation, percentage, t-test, relation test with SPSS Win 12.0 program.
Results of the study were as followed. First, the rate of atypical preschoolers with one category and above were 23.4%, and it was considered as the high rate. Second, preschoolers with Hyper-Sensitive/Active showed the high rate at mean scores and at-risk, but low rate at atypical behaviors. And the overlapping rates across 4 categories were high comparatively. Third, the rate of 294 preschoolers referred as at-risk social-emotional problems were 44.2% as atypical behaviors, which represented the higher than 1,096 preschoolers all enrolled in significantly. Fourth, the rate of atypical behavior categories showed the Hyper-Sensitive/Active, Underreactive, Dysregulated, Detached as orders. Fifth, the score of teachers were the higher than of parents significantly. Based on these results, the following issues were discussed, building the system screening the social-emotional problems of preschoolers as early as possible, implementing the in-service teacher training for correct screening of social-emotional problems of preschoolers, promoting the objectivity of the teacher observation by using the standardized screening test, and providing the parents support who found and intervened the social-emotional problems.
