This paper compared and analyzed the psychoanalytical mechanism
pattern and feature in ‘I’m a singer’ season 1 and ‘Superstar K’ season 3 which are the most representative reality competition programs in Korea, and tried to find out the common ground and difference between the two. For this, Lacan’s theory and concept were applied to this study in order to investigate the identification between the viewers/participants and cast members of program and role of each of them and acknowledgment mechanism, desire, fantasy and so on. As the results, the place and the desire of the subject which were taking a role and achieving recognition- recognizing of between each of cast members-viewers through the equation mechanism were discovered, and the desire of The Other which is the premise involved with this was in these two programs. These two programs have the common ground of realizing the desire of subject through the desire of the other and desire of identification. And symbolic identification existed in between the participants and The Other, the viewers had symbolic identification as an appraiser of participants like the judge, and imaginary identification to participants in ‘Superstar K3 ’. On the other hand, in ‘I’m a singer’, symbolic identification existed in between the professional singer and The Other, the viewers had imaginary identification to the audience evaluation group. ‘I’m a singer’ is different in these points from ‘Superstar K3’. These two programs, ‘I’m a singer’ which is a competition program of professional singers and ‘Superstar K3’ which is a audition program, have to do with the loss of social authority of professional singers, furthermore, it implies fall of The Other which grants symbolic effect to them. The fact that the authority of The Other is lost means that we have became the subject in selection not traditional subject, and this is related to the fact that these two programs is the one of choice by the viewers/audience evaluation group based on reality.
