The twofold inflectional system is one of the characteristic phenomena in hungarian verbs. In hungarian sentences, the finite verbs are to have indefinite vs definite inflectional suffix to inform the grammatical categories of the person and the number of subject and the definiteness of object. When the verb has the definite object as its argument, it becomes the object - flectional suffix. The transitive verbs with indefinite object or intransitive verbs are to be inflected unmarked, so called, the subject-flectional suffix. This twofold inflectional system is not only the morphological sign of the definiteness of the object, but also is related with the word order of hungarian sentences. The indefinite object precedes the verb, the definite object follows its verb. This paper aims to describe the twofold inflectional system of hungarian verbs from the frame of the generative grammar, and to explore the multi functional charater of the definiteness of the nominal phrases, based on the grade of transitivity, the structure of verb and arguments, their order, such as the syntactic alternation of intransitive sentences and ellipsis of definite argument.
Results of this paper find that definite object is generated as compliments of V‘, whereas indefinite object as modifier of VP. It is further observed that the definite object can move to topic position, according to the projection of discourse logical categories, it causes to precede the verb as topic of sentence, not as complement. Sentences with intransitive verb have indefinite objective argument as adjunct of VP. The alternation of adverbial argument with definite object argument in intransitive sentences shows that it is based on the same syntactic structure from the frame of generative theory.
