We investigate the relationship between stock prices, interest rates, and exchange rates after the 1999 financial deregulation in India. Before this deregulation was implemented, few studies involving this area had been documented. In this paper, we adopt regression analyses using stock prices, interest rates, and exchange rates. Our findings are that stock prices, interest rates, and exchange rates are all nonstationary, a unit root. Using our simple regression model with lags optimal, we find that the coefficients on the lagged variables are not strongly significant. Specifically, the stock price returns have no impact on changes in interest rates and exchange rates. As such, we adopt multiple regression analyses with 12-lagged variables, and thus find that the changes in interest rates and exchange rates with some time lags do affect each other. Using the VAR method, we also find that the stock price returns affect changes in interest rates and exchange rates both in the short- and long-term. On the other hand, the changes in interest rates have mid- and long-term effects on stock price returns.
