Democracy cannot be simply defined as something certain but is characterized as ambiguity in itself. Lefort’s theory on democracy helps us to understand such ambiguity. Above all, Lefort views the political as that which controls with power the opposition between the desires to oppress and not to be oppressed. In the pre-modern age, king successfully controled the society as the integrated symbol of human and suprahuman bodies. After the king’s body was severed with civic revolutions, modern democratic regimes have been built on the motto of ‘the rule of people.’ At the same time, it has tacitly meant that nobody rules and that power is laid on empty place because people cannot be determinated as someone. However, liberal democracy tried to fill up the empty place with determinate individuals, the result of which is that lots of conflicts and struggles have generated among each individuals. Totalitarianism has shown up as a trial to remedy social divisions in liberal democracy, but has made a homogeneously oppressed society which nobody wanted. To overcome the crisis of modern democracy, it is necessary to recognize the duality inscribed within itself, and to make the balance between ‘the rule of people’ and ‘nobody rules.’
